The Riksbank guarantees the payment system and has been doing it for hundreds of years by issuing banknotes and coins.
However, liquidity is less used in Sweden and the Riksbank can see a future when it is even difficult to pay with. Last year, the Riksbank therefore launched a project to determine whether it was possible to issue digital cash or the electronic crown as it is called.
In a press release The Riksbank writes that an electronic crown can "guarantee that the public always has access to a means of payment guaranteed by the state".
"The next step of the riksbank's work with the e-crown should be to build an e-crown to learn more and try out what technical solutions are useful and achievable," says Eva Julin.

On Friday, the Riksbank issued a second report on the e-crown, stating clearly that the project would take a step closer to completion.
The Bank concludes that it will develop a technical solution to identify those that are useful and feasible.
The Riksbank will also be make proposals for legislative changes to give both the mandate to the bank and a legal position for e-krona.
In addition, the bank will continue its research on the financial consequences of e-krona.
Sveriges Riksbank could become the first central bank in the world to issue a digital currency.
