The innovative production of tall diesel is rewarded with Sweden's oldest technological award, the Polhem Award. Lars Stigsson, chemical engineer, and chemist Valeri Naydenov, who praised this method.
"It is with joy and pride that we receive the Polhems Award, and getting such an interesting prize for our technical solution and its usefulness is of paramount importance," comments Lars Stigsson in the Sveriges Ingenjörer engineers press release.
The idea of using tall oil, a residual product of pulp production, was born in 2005 and has since moved from the lab to the large-scale industrial process. Compared with traditional diesel, tall oil reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions by up to 90%.
At present, Sunpine, based in Piteå, produces around 100,000 cubic meters of large diesel per year. But thanks to new investments, production is expected to increase by 50% by 2020.
The awards ceremony will take place in Polhemsplatsen on November 14 in Stockholm. In addition to a gold medal, Stigsson and Naydenov receive a prize of 250,000 SEK.
