In recent months, many Swedes have received an email stating that they had been filmed while they were in mush. The sender has threatened to send the so-called films to the recipient unless an amount is paid. The police urged those who received the e-mail not to pay.
The IT company Cisco Talos has analyzed two extortion campaigns still in progress. One that started on August 30 and one that started on October 5.
The extortionists used email addresses and passwords that became public during other major data breaches, and then sent the email. They have been written in several languages, including English, German, French and Swedish.
According to Cisco, more than 233,000 extortion missions have been sent to nearly 16,000 unique e-mail addresses between August 30 and October 26. Emails were sent from 137,606 unique IP addresses. More than 40% of e-mails were sent from Vietnam, Russia and India.
The extortionists demanded that between $ 1,000 and $ 7,000 be poured into a bitcoin disk. According to the Cisco analysis, the extortion jersey portfolios have a retention of about $ 146,000, or just over 1.3 million Swedish kroner. However, some portfolios have also been used for other spam attacks.
