Two of the top three German automakers have now agreed to pay for diesel car upgrades in their home country.
The German government launched in early October to reduce emissions of diesel vehicles in the country. Car manufacturers were invited either to offer owners of diesel cars in the country an advantageous exchange, or to rebuild and upgrade old vehicles.
According to German magazines Daimler and Volkswagen, after talks with German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer on Thursday, they are willing to pay for the renovation of diesel passenger cars.
Daimler would be willing to assume the total cost, estimated at 3,000 euros per vehicle, while according to the newspaper, VW would have agreed to cover 80% of this amount. BMW has so far refused to participate in the project.
According to the German Center for Automobile Management, manufacturing costs could reach 12.5 billion euros. Until now, however, there are no concrete plans to know which vehicles could be upgraded, how they will be upgraded or when this could be applicable.
