We ate snails – but eight years later
A man in Sydney ate a live snail for red wine and was infected with a rare parasite. Eight years later, he died, reports the Australian media.

The story of the 29-year-old woman in Sydney begins at a minor event late in the night of 2010, writes the news agency News. The man drank red wine in a garden with his friends and, when a snail crawled past the company, they began to incite themselves to eat it.
A few days later, he had leg pain but did not seek medical treatment immediately. Later, doctors discovered that he was suffering from meningitis caused by a round mask infection. Round-specific species are usually found in rodents, but can spread to snails that eat rat bites.
The man fell into a coma that lasted 420 days. When he finally woke up, the brain had sustained permanent damage. The case has been widely reported in the Australian media and the family has been struggling to get support from the state and private donors to take care of it.
But his life could not be saved. After eight years of fighting the disease, he died Friday, surrounded by relatives and friends.
