In order to guarantee the desired capacity for long-distance trains on the Zurich-Ticino / Milan line without restricting regional traffic, SBB is building a double track of 1.7 km near Walchwil. At the same time, the SBB is renovating seven tunnels and 49 other infrastructure projects on the Zug-Arth-Goldau line (underpasses, culverts, bridges, etc.). The Federal Office of Transport (OFT) granted permission to build for this project in 2015.

The Federal Administrative Court dismissed the complaint on January 10, 2017. Since this judgment was appealed at the Federal Supreme Court, the start of the project was delayed. SBB now has the green light and is continuing with the detailed planning of the construction works. The Bundesbahnen in a press release on Tuesday

Extended project with track barrier

The construction of the new double lane allows more capacity in long-distance traffic on the Gotthard axis and the trains of S2 line Walchwil Hörndli S-Bahn not only hourly, but half an hour of service. With the maintenance of the substance in the tunnels, two-story trains between Zug and Arth-Goldau will be available in the future. At the same time, the Arth-Goldau station has renewed its track and platform systems. During conversion, among others, Perrons are increased to allow comfortable entry and exit.

For the renovation of Zug-Arth-Goldau and the construction of the double track at Walchwil, the line will be closed mid-2019 for one and a half years (until the end of 2020). During the journey, all trains run between the train and Arth-Goldau via Rotkreuz.

Due to the necessary diversion, the travel time on the north-south axis is extended for about 15 minutes during the lock. The detailed effects on the 2019 calendar can be found on www.fahrplanentwurf.ch. Between Zug Oberwil and Walchwil, the bus service is reinforced. The detailed concept is developed by SBB in collaboration with the cantons. Further information on the project can be found at www.sbb.ch/zugersee.
