Controversial Immigration Initiative Withdrawn – Watch

The absolute majority of committee members decided to immediately withdraw the initiative "ZAFI," said Sunday President Richard Koller. The initiators would have until December 13, 2018 time to collect the necessary 100,000 signatures

A good half of the signatures were collected, said Koller at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. It would have taken another financial investment.

The reason for the demolition is the initiative of limitation of the UDC. Since the party claims to have signatures for their referendum together in June, the ZAFI Committee sees no way to anchor its initiative in the constitution.

The Limiting Initiative goes further than ZAFI, it wants to access the Swiss labor market by putting an end to the free movement of people directly and collectively, said Koller. ZAFI would have obtained such a measure only of 3.2% unemployment.

If both initiatives were adopted, the committee would support the more radical limitation initiative. In addition, the SVP's budget as a party of a small club is unequal to a referendum and its chances of success are considered marginal.

The launch of the ZAFI initiative has had political consequences for Koller. He was released by the Canton of Lucerne UDC as party secretary. The party secretariat was a 50% body.

The President of the Cantonal Party, Angela Lüthold, justified this decision by saying that we could not serve two masters. The SVP has had a competitive referendum. Both initiatives are reactions to the parliamentary implementation of the mass immigration initiative.

It no longer belongs to the party, said former president of SVP Ortsparttei Beromünster. The UDC had not put pressure on the committee for it to withdraw the initiative. It was not until the limitation initiative came about. (SDA)
