Reports of possible abuses take ETH Zurich very seriously, writes the university in a Wednesday message. ETH Zurich President Lino Guzzella said: "We scrupulously follow the advice, review, evaluate and listen to all parties".

The internal preliminary investigation led the school management to initiate an independent external investigation: The purpose is to verify whether the allegations are justified. In addition, it should be clarified "if steps need to be taken to improve the working environment of PhD students in the corresponding Chair and Department."

ETH students criticized and accused several institutions in recent months. According to the university, four administrative investigations are currently underway, including the Basel Inquiry

. Among other things, an investigation was opened last year at the former Institute of Astronomy for "suspected faults in research". According to the communication of October 2017, the school administration took "immediate measures such as the protection of doctoral students and the dismantling of the institute".

These are elaborate procedures that take their time, writes the university in its Wednesday communication. Until the completion of individual proceedings, they do not comment on investigations. ETH Zurich stresses, however, that the school leadership has emphasized, through a campaign of respect and a new code of conduct, the importance of respectful treatment of the university.
