The City of Bern supports the service agreements with Bern Tourismus AG and Bern Meetings & Events AG. They receive 400,000 francs more than their predecessor.
Thursday, a majority of councilors welcomed the new direction of the Bernese Municipal Council of Tourism: it should be sustainable, authentic and environmentally friendly. Instead of mass tourism, tourism is promoted.
The city has also been strategically reoriented: the former Berne Tourism Association has been transformed into Bern Tourismus AG and, together with the newly established Bern Meetings & Events AG, legally placed under the new Bern Welcome AG holding company. .
New products and concrete services will be offered to tourism stakeholders. This is why Bern Welcome AG receives 400,000 francs more than what the Bern Tourism Association has received so far. In total, the support of both organizations for the years 2019 to 2022 amounts to 1.27 million francs per year.
GLP, SVP and Free Group wanted to reduce
Extra expenses made in the city council to talk. Many parliamentarians did not know what the additional 400,000 francs would be for. Three parties therefore wanted to reduce the funds: the free group and the GLP to the newly increased amount of 400,000 francs and the SVP of 200,000 francs.
"If the funds are already increased, you have to clearly justify what," said GLP's Marianne Schild. The model was too spongy, said Zora Schneider of the free group. This criticism was also followed by the Green Alliance and the Young Alternative. The reduction to 200,000 francs is "a compromise," said the vice president.
The majority of the Council, however, rejected all the reductions. They wanted to give a chance to the new concept, which came from SP, FDP, BDP, CVP, GFL and EVP. "I find that it is problematic to make politics with the bag of money," said Manuel C. Widmer of the FGL. And Thomas Berger of the Young Free Minds said: "One does not remove the hay from a good dairy cow."
