For the moment not clear – The drinking water remains polluted – Niederamt – Solothurn

The evaluation of samples takes at least three days. A possible release of drinking water is announced by the authorities by a leaflet and on the home page. Until this happens, the drinking water must continue to be boiled. The next information from the authorities should be given on Tuesday evening

ARA Winznau as origin

On Monday night, last week, the population was informed by leaflets that drinking water was contaminated with faeces. The source of pollution is the Wastewater Treatment Plant (ARA) Winznau. Clearly, untreated sewage was dumped into Alte Aare and from there into the groundwater.

The polluted waters were transported to the drinking water sources of Dulliken, Lostorf and Obergösgen via underground siphons. The community of Winznau is not concerned with a simple reason: its groundwater intake is located upstream of the ARA at Winznauer Schachen – unlike other municipalities whose pumping stations are downstream .

Dependent on groundwater

the Olten-Gösgen regional water supply plan their drinking water to 100 percent of the water table. He is caught in the pump station Ey South of the old Aare. Both Lehmgrube and Engelberg tanks are used as reservoirs

In case of emergency, Dulliken can supply water from Starrkirch-Wil. The community of Obergösgen depends on groundwater. With Lostorf, she manages the Schacheninsel underground water pumping station near the Aare canal. Another source of water supply is possible in the municipalities of Däniken, Dulliken, Lostorf, Niedergösgen and Winznau. The municipality of Lostorf can in turn – in addition to the groundwater of the Obergösger Schachen – resort to spring water.

Three spring water tanks are available: Falkenstein, Mahren and Fountain. Of these, the water has gone into a total of five tanks. If the spring water is insufficient, groundwater is introduced. This is particularly necessary in two scenarios: after periods of low rainfall, because springs fall dry; and in heavy rain, because this leads to excessive turbidity of the water.

In theory, Lostorf could decouple from underground water supply if the Aar had to be polluted – provided the pollution was known in a timely manner. However, this has not been the case with the current pollution of drinking water, as stated Heinz Marti, responsible for construction management. Therefore, it must be assumed that polluted groundwater enters all reservoirs and thus affects the entire Lostorf water supply system.

Chlorination as a first measure

Immediately after contamination, a chlorination of the causes of drinking water. With chlorine, the germs in the water should be killed. In order for chlorinated water to reach even the farthest corner of the branched water supply system, the water is drained from several terminals, says Peter Wyss, Dulliker Well Master.

. Because of the extensive network, this process takes a long time: in Lostorf alone, the water pipes total more than 30 kilometers. After the completion of the chlorination, the flushing of the system also serves to evacuate as quickly as possible the chlorine – and the unpleasant odor that results – out of the pipes.
