The banners proudly point out that the wastelands on the Bern gas site are apparently occupied. This is clear from a press release from the "Anstadt Collective". A "small city of utopia" is planned, write the squatters. The message was written from the point of view of the Gaswerkareal and begins this way: "I am tall, green, fenced and lonely for years – I am the great meadow in the Gaswerkareal." In addition, this means that the area should now be animated in a few years. " As the online magazine "Journal B", to which the squatters gave a preliminary discussion, a barter and loan workshop as well as a sewing workshop and a coffee boat must be created
Squatters give themselves tacitly
The current owner of the site is Energie Wasser Bern (EWB). The head of the ISF media, Claudia Kohlschütter, says that the squatters have informed them. "We contacted the people in charge and we showed our willingness to talk," says Kohlschütter. Now, we are waiting for an answer
The Bernese cantonal police are already aware of the occupation. "One of our patrols discovered Wednesday morning at 8 am that various vehicles had been parked in the area," the police wrote. So it was, as is common practice, informed the owner. At this point, it is now time to decide next steps. An advertisement was not received.
During a visual inspection on the ground, the squatters did not want to give any information and referred – with hooded faces – to the publication of the media sent. They set up with various tents and caravans on the premises. There were visible young people.
They opened the fence and closed it with a chain. People who have concerns should be felt, that is on a sign.
Among other things, the city of Bern wants to build non-profit housing on the site – but it is still in the planning phase (see box). Currently, large parts of the area are used as storage space and parking space.
By the end of the year 2018, according to the results of local councils on the extent of use and connection to public transport should be available. By 2020, toxic contaminated sites must be eliminated. But before 2021, construction work should not begin. A vote on the construction of the planned apartments is scheduled for 2020.
Remembrance of Youth Disorders
The Gas Plant Complex houses the Gaskessel Youth Center and the Ryff Factory. It was up to the 1970s location for gas production for urban energy supply. The cast raises memories: In the 1980s, the area was occupied several times, around 1985 by the Zaffaraya community, who built a cabin village on the site. By the end of 1987, the city was torn by patience, after three ultimatums were rendered ineffective. The violent expulsion has given rise to many demonstrations in the city – which ultimately led to the tolerance of the school riding. The Zaffaraya exists until today: It lies on an area near the highway Neufeld. (The Covenant)
