In March 2017, Rod signed an entry-level contract with Californians for three years. The NHL organization had drafted the Geneva-Servette striker in June 2014 under number 53. Towards the end of the last two seasons, he played 16 games in the AHL (1 goal, 4 assists) for the San Jose Barracuda team
