The decision of the Parliament of the City of Zurich has been taken, but there is still a long way to go before the new football stadium. The SP wants to launch a popular initiative, which includes a stadium financed by the tax and the abandonment of two residential towers.
Zurichers can vote for a new football stadium. City Council paved the way for this on Thursday night after a grueling four-hour debate. By 73 votes to 37 and 7 abstentions, a majority said yes to the City Council project and to private investors. In addition to the stadium for 18,000 spectators, this provides for a cooperative colony and two residential towers. Presumably in November, voters can comment.
Local council approval occurred because individual SP and Green MPs made a "tactical yes". They wanted to hold a referendum according to their own statements. Due to the restraint of spending, a quorum of 63 votes was required. With the majority of today, SP, Greens and AL could have poured the stadium project into parliament. The FDP, SVP, GLP and EPP supporting the case would be inferior
"Big mouth, nothing behind"
The mantra that he needed a plebiscite was hardly questioned in the debate. However, there is a great deal of concern about the "political dislocation" of the leftist partner: Green City Council Markus Knauss. He spoke "of a strange discussion". At the Council, he advocated a "non-heroic to CS benefit project."
Knauss wants to preserve the fallow of today or at least plans for more green space in the future project. In particular, referring to the SP, he said: "You have a big mouth, but nothing behind." The people of Zurich have shown in many votes that they want more affordable apartments and green spaces. In this respect, the current stadium project is not enough. The SP obviously wanted an eloquent vote.
For the November poll, the PS will recommend a negative vote. It bothers the two skyscrapers, which would overlook the Prime Tower. These rounds were awarded to investors – investment foundations of CS and HRS – as an object of return. In return, they finance the football stadium in the city. The total volume of the project is 550 million Swiss francs
CS sells 125 apartments
The SP wants to launch a popular initiative at a meeting of delegates in August, which provided for the abandonment of the skyscrapers as well as a stage funded by taxes. If the people of Zurich accept the planned project in November, the SP will probably withdraw its initiative.
The Wednesday evening city council also adopted a Green amendment. The CS is obliged to offer the city a total of 125 apartments for sale. This brings Zurich closer to the goal of third parties, according to which by 2050 one-third of all city apartments must be rented for charitable purposes. The CS accepted the agreement.
