Ticino is successful with growing rice

(nda) It was the mid-eighties. The Terreni farm went to Maggia on the verge of extinction: the production of milk, meat and fodder was hardly paid. The director of the time looked for alternatives and found one: rice. By the 1930s, farmers in the region planted rice but did not use the crop commercially. They also had little success with their experiences, because they flooded the fields as they knew farmers in Asia.

However, the Maggia delta and the Magadino plains require a different culture method. The rice is dried like grain and watered once a week. For most rice varieties, the warm weather in Ticino is too short, the cold too long. However, growth is possible for the Loto rice variety, which is well suited to risotto.

One risk is cultivation, however: If the winter lasts too long or it is too cold in the summer, the crop is in danger. The next is expected in October. It grows in May

If the seed grows as desired this year, not only the farmer but also the risotto lover will be happy. The demand for rice in Ticino is enormous. Factory Director Markus Giger says in the SDA Keystone video. "There are people who only eat this rice, which makes them happy, but also almost scary."
