Elon Musk now says Tesla is aiming for a wider public release of its full self-driving beta in about four weeks.
It’s been almost a year since Tesla started testing its full self-drive beta as part of its early access program with select customers.
The software allows Tesla vehicles to be driven virtually both on highways and on city streets, but it is still considered Level 2 driver assistance as it requires driver supervision at all times. The driver remains responsible for the vehicle, must keep his hands on the wheel and be ready to take control.
CEO Elon Musk has promised a larger version of the Full Self-Driving Beta software to customers who have purchased the FSD package, but the release has been delayed for some time.
Most recently, the CEO tied the larger version to Tesla pushing a new FSD Beta version 10 update, which was expected after two more “point releases” in the coming weeks.
In a new comment on Twitter today, Musk says the plan has apparently changed and Tesla is now aiming to push FSD Beta v10 to the Early Access fleet next week.
After this version, the CEO should test it for about four weeks before the larger version:
“We should be there with Beta 10, which comes out one week from Friday (no one-off release this week). It will have a fully recycled NN, so it will take a few extra weeks for tuning and bug fixes. Best guess is a public beta button in about 4 weeks.
The larger version should take the form of a download button that allows people who purchased the FSD package to decide whether or not to download the FSD Beta software.
Tesla recently released a new version 9.2 of FSD Beta, which didn’t impress Musk, but he personally tested v9.3 and liked the new version.
Now it looks like v9.3 will become v10 and be pushed to the Early Access fleet for testing before a larger version.

Other markets should not receive the download button, even if you have purchased the FSD package, as Tesla has to adapt the system to the specifics of the road in other countries.
Updated September 1 Musk today updated his timeline with a more counted date. On Friday, September 10, Tesla is expected to roll out Beta 10. “It looks promising that Beta 10.1, approximately 2 weeks later, will be sufficient for the public enrollment request button.”
