A family in Texas said their mother’s funeral, held earlier this month, turned into a widespread event after more than 40 people contracted coronavirus.
Delynda Cruz, whose mother performed the funeral, told Fox 4 News that she started to feel sick about two days after the November 8 service.
“I had chills Tuesday night,” she told the newspaper. “And then Wednesday morning I had a little fever.
Cruz said the family was speaking out after more than 100 people came to honor his mother because they want others to be aware of the risk of coronavirus. Those infected were between 3 and 90 years old, Fox 4 News reported.
“It was scary knowing that I could have been the one to give [it to] my 90-year-old aunt, ”she told the newspaper. “Or, I could have been the one who gave the 3 year old, or I could have been the one who gave to my cousin who is fighting for his life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers large in-person gatherings and services held indoors where it is difficult for people to maintain a distance of 6 feet as an activity that is among the “most at risk” .
“In some situations, many people have fallen ill with COVID-19 after attending a funeral service,” the CDC warns. “To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in communities, changes must be made to the way funerals, visitations and memorials to the deceased are organized. These tips provide strategies to protect yourself and others as you mourn the loss of a loved one, support each other, plan your funeral, and attend funeral services and visitation.

Cruz said most people wore masks, but social distancing was not enforced during room service. The state health department has reportedly contacted several family members, Cruz told Fox 4 News.

Texas has experienced more than 1.2 million cases of the coronavirus and more than 21,630 deaths. The state currently has a test positivity rate of 10.66%, according to Johns Hopkins University. Several other families have spoken out about the spread among their loved ones, including one family who created a public service announcement about their coronavirus cluster.
