Residents of Oswego, Madison and Onondaga counties reported hearing a loud boom just after 5 pm on Monday that in some cases shook their homes.

Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society said that a fireball, larger and brighter than conventional meteors, was entering the Earth's atmosphere over Lake Ontario. This also caused a loud sound.

"Larger than normal fireballs that penetrate the lower atmosphere will produce a sonic boom. The people who reported sounds are very close to the track of this object, "said Lunsford.

He added that this kind of event is very common and does not pose a danger to anyone.
