The Caps beat the Penguins 3-1, no, for real they won this one

In an amazing turn of events, the Washington Capitals played well against the Pittsburgh Penguins and actually won a game. I would be honored to tell you about it.

We were there, at the start of the second period but at the end of capitalism, when Nick Jensen passed the Pens in the corner to prepare Conor Sheary for a quick laser fire. Later in that span, TJ Oshie sent a magical pass to Jakub Vrana, who covered it to beat Tristan Jarry high up.

The Caps did not let go in the third. Early on, Richard Panik found Lars Eller on the weak side to make it 3-0. The Penguins got the shutout late on a messy play, but the day was up to Washington.

  • The first half was a bit sleepy, but she was also curious. Even-matched shooting attempts were 50/50, but Washington controlled 84% of expected goals. This is because they have completely kept Pittsburgh out of the territory. It is quite unusual. I wrote about this model yesterday but didn’t expect to see it demonstrated so clearly.

  • Vitek Vanecek came close to registering his first shutout in the NHL until Justin schultz pushed a penguin inside him just as Aston-Reese fired. Huge disappointment. Schultz probably owes Vanecek an edible arrangement or something.

It was a hell of a good game.

It was well played. The Caps scored goals. They didn’t blow a big lead. They haven’t committed a billion penalties. I’m just genuinely happy with it all.

Now three days off, like they need it. JK they play Thursday. My fault.
