BEREA, Ohio – The chip on Baker Mayfield’s shoulder resulting from his poor game in the 14-7 victory over the Vikings will have a lot more impact going forward than the slightly torn labrum in his left.
As Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt insisted on Thursday, Mayfield’s partially torn labrum in the non-pitching shoulder was not a factor in one of the ugliest games of his NFL career (15-for-33, 155 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, score of 59.5).

Some of the criticism eased Thursday after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Mayfield had the labrum partially torn, but Mayfield will still use the criticism as fuel.

He was replaced by Cameron Dantzler, who had an exceptional afternoon allowing only one reception on four targets and now Mayfield at a passer rating of 39.6 when targeted.
It’s not ideal for Mayfield to have to wear a harness, but most of his passes have been knocked down, so the left shoulder doesn’t serve his distance.
As Mayfield himself put it, “Everyone is going to try to find an excuse. I just gotta do the damn game. It’s that simple.
Mayfield will probably come out swinging. The little tear in her shoulder won’t hurt her as much as the huge chip on her will help.
