Groton – Fitch made his way through a 13-point first hole and was eight points ahead with less than a minute to go in the first half on Friday night.
Things then started to take a turn for the worse for the Falcons.
New Fairfield scored twice in the final minute of half-time to take the lead and beat Fitch, 37-27, in a non-league football game at Dorr Field.
The Rebels scored with 53.3 seconds left in the half to come close to 21-19.
Fairfield rookie Ryan Gruetzner intercepted Ben Perry’s pass in Fitch’s next offensive play to give the Rebels the ball to their own 42nd with 43.2 seconds left and no timeouts.
The Rebels were third and 7th in their 45th when Justin McCormack threw a 30-yard pass to a wide-open Vincent Sarro up to Fitch 25.
Three plays later, senior wide receiver Jack Lyden cut down the middle, caught a pass from McCormack near Fitch 5, and extended his arms over the goal line for a 25-yard touchdown as time expired for put the Rebels back in the lead, 25-21.
The conversion pass for the new Fairfield failed.
Senior Jason Caswell was a workaholic for the Rebels (4-0). He ran 36 times for 205 yards and two touchdowns. He ran 23 times for 138 yards in the second half alone.
McCormack completed 7 of 13 passes for 144 yards with two touchdowns and scored on a 2-yard rush for New Fairfield.
Perry completed 8 of 17 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns and ran 11 times for 124 yards and one touchdown for the Falcons (3-1).
Senior Aiden Greaves caught six passes for 133 yards and two scores for Fitch.
It took New Fairfield a little over three hours to get to Fitch, as he arrived on a bus a little after 5:30 pm There are 100 miles between the two schools.
Rebel elder Ryan Fata got behind his defenseman in his team’s first play of the scrum on the sideline and caught a 59-yard touchdown pass from McCormack as New Fairfield took a 7-foot lead. -0 just 17 seconds from the game.
New Fairfield caught Fitch off guard in the ensuing kickoff as the ball was kicked by a Falcons player and recovered by the Rebels at Fitch 46.
McCormack found Sarro wide open in the end zone for an 18-yard touchdown pass. Falcons senior Calvin Kilgore blocked the extra point as New Fairfield took a 13-0 lead with 9:33 remaining in the first quarter.
Perry joined Greaves for a 48-yard passing play in Fitch’s first offensive play to the New Fairfield 17-yard line.
Senior Shawn Bebee scored four plays later on a 3-yard rush. Junior Charles Cabusao scored the extra point to cut Fitch’s deficit to 13-7 with 7:17 left in the first quarter.
Kilgore intercepted an optional Caswell half-back pass to the Falcons 42 in New Fairfield’s second play of his next offensive possession.
Perry threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Greaves four plays later. Cabusao’s extra point put Fitch, 14-13, ahead with 4:36 left in the first quarter.
The Falcons had a second and 4 of their own 45 when Perry took the shot, chose not to pitch and spun back and forth into a short zone for a 55-yard touchdown. Cabusao’s extra point took Fitch’s lead to 21-13 with 4:36 left in the first half.
McCormack rushed for a 24-yard run on the seventh play of the Rebels’ next practice to give them the ball to Fitch 10. Caswell ran for a touchdown on the next play.
New Fairfield’s conversion pass failed, leaving the Falcons still leading, 21-19, with 53.3 seconds left in the first half.
