LOWELL, MASS. (WHDH) – A Lowell family is mourning the loss of its 4-year-old daughter, who according to health authorities is the third pediatric death associated with influenza in the Bay State this season.

Sopheak Paak, the father of the deceased granddaughter, spoke in front of a small memorial in the family's living room, with a plate of food, candles and incense. His 6-year-old brother, he says, is busy with it.

"She is four years old and she is smart," he said. "My wife, she cries every day."

Paak says that he took his daughter to the emergency department of Lowell General Hospital last Tuesday.

The doctors treated her and sent her home. The fever erupted on Thursday and Friday.

"Everything was normal, but she was feeling tired and she was sleeping," said Paak.

Paak says her daughter had an allergic reaction to seafood a week before her flu.

"I think it's not a flu," Paak said.

The Lowell General Hospital and the State Department of Public Health did not comment on the medical details, citing confidentiality rules for health care.

Another girl from Middlesex County and a teenager from Worcester County have also died of the flu.

Director of Epidemiology Dr. Larry Madoff said, "These deaths are tragic and remind us of the dangers of influenza and the importance of influenza vaccination."
