The MacBook Butterfly Keyboard Is Called "The Worst Product Of The Apple Story"

American blogger Apple, John Gruber, has called Apple's butterfly keyboards "worst products in the history of Apple" in his Daring Fireball blog.

"The MacBook should have the best keyboards in the industry, but the worst," he said. "They are damaging the reputation of the MacBook brand."

Gruber was reacting to a Wall Street Journal article written with a defective third-generation butterfly keyboard on a 2018 MacBook Air and released without correcting the resulting typos.

I wrote a similar article almost a year ago with my refurbished 2016 MacBook Pro, shipped with a second-generation butterfly keypad that refused to type the letter G unless you supported it. very loud on the sidelines. The letter is missing in almost every word, which makes it difficult to read.

I wrote it on a replacement throttle keyboard – a repair made by Apple under warranty – after the original faulty keyboard on my MacBook Pro had similar problems, such as keystrokes that refused to save or, when they did, recorded as double-strokes. After a second repair, I have not encountered any problems … until now.

For people who live from the computer, the Apple Keyboard can pose problem. The problem was related to dust and debris, and the company had initially suggested people to use compressed air to clean their keyboards.

When the cleaning did not work, the company solved the problem in June with a free keyboard repair program. And it was supposed to be tackled at the hardware level with the third generation butterfly keyboards – the same generation that used to write the newspaper article – with a thin film apparently to prevent dust and debris from affecting the keys. Apple made no mention of the purpose of the film, but this appeared in Apple's earlier patents.

I fix it

On Wednesday, Apple made its first apology to MacBook users facing keyboard issues. The company told Business Insider that people who still had keyboard problems should contact Apple Technical Support, its hotline.

The butterfly keyboard of Apple is not the most popular innovation. It was designed to allow the ultra-lightweight design of Apple's Mac laptops, which are beautifully slim. But that clearly has a price.

Some Mac users have complained that Apple's butterfly keyboard is hard to type because the keys have very little "displacement", but the distance it takes to press them. I can attest that it is not as comfortable as an ordinary keyboard, but in my opinion it is not a break.

Others have complained that the butterfly keyboard is loud. I can attest that it is much more powerful than previous Mac keyboards, or most other keyboards.

However, not all Mac users with a butterfly keyboard experience issues such as missing keystrokes or ghost strikes. In its apology, Apple said that "the vast majority of Mac notebook customers are living a positive experience with the new keyboard".

My colleague Ben Gilbert, who had bought a MacBook Air 2018 when it was released in November, had no problem with his butterfly keyboard. Plus, Ben says that he likes superficial trips on the keyboard of his MacBook Air because it allows him to type faster. Regarding the shot out loud, Ben said, "I do not find it too strong, I find it clicky."
