A new tool may come in handy for families in Wisconsin as they plan their holiday season, while dealing with the hassle of the pandemic.
The “COVID-19 Event Risk Assessment Planning Tool” was developed by a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and assesses the risk of a COVID-19 positive person attending an event, such as Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas morning , in every county of Wisconsin, and in the United States.
The severity of the risk is determined by the number of people attending an event and the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic in a particular county.
There are five levels of risk, each using a percentage. The percentage for each level shows the likelihood that at least one person with COVID-19 will be present at an event. You can also set the size of an event, ranging from 10 to 5,000 people.
Looking at Friday night, with the event size set at a minimum of 10 people, most of Wisconsin’s counties, including Milwaukee and its surrounding counties, the risk of such an event is estimated at 25-50 percent. Or 25-50% of people attending your event have the coronavirus.
By increasing the size of the event about halfway down the beach, to 50 people at an event, the storyline changes dramatically. The tool finds at that point, in almost every county in Wisconsin, that it is likely that 75-99% of a COVID-19 positive person will attend your event. Only three counties in the state have slightly less.
The creators of the tool say the data used in the interactive map comes from the New York Times COVID-19 Tracking Project and COVID-19 Data Project, according to Hill.
