This helps to highlight why the pace of the COVID vaccine rollout needs to be accelerated in a major way, with Bloomberg vaccine tracking showing that only 5.48 million doses have been administered in the United States so far, through Thursday. But there is at least one new dose of good news to report about the safety of COVID vaccines.

In the CDC’s latest Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the agency provided the most up-to-date look at how many people have experienced the severe but rare allergic reaction called anaphylaxis (which can be life threatening) after have received the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine.
From December 14 to 23, the CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System found 21 cases of anaphylaxis after people received the Pfizer vaccine, with 71% of those episodes occurring within 15 minutes of vaccination. That translates to 11.1 cases per 1 million doses of vaccine – making the likelihood of this happening extremely rare, to say the least. For comparison, however, the rate of severe allergic reaction after people have received the flu shot is only 1.3 episodes per 1 million doses.
At a press conference, the director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, said: “The anaphylaxis rate of COVID-19 vaccines may appear high compared to vaccines against the flu. But I want to reassure you that this is still a rare result. “
New data from the CDC continues to share those of people who had a severe allergic reaction after vaccination, 17 had a history of allergies to everything from certain foods to medications. For this reason, the CDC states that people with general allergies shouldn’t be afraid to receive the vaccine – with the warning that anyone with a known allergic reaction to specific ingredients in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines (like polysorbate ) should not receive the vaccine.
“It is possible,” the new CDC report speculates, “that intense media attention around the national COVID-19 vaccination program … (has) affected the behaviors and practices of vaccinees and health care providers, including elevated worry and anxiety, a higher index of suspicion for anaphylaxis, and a lower threshold for early treatment of suspected cases, thus leading to an increased diagnosis of suspected anaphylaxis. “
