A Louisiana man on a road trip through Montana said he had a strange encounter at a bar with a man he believed to be Brian Laundrie – just a day before his girlfriend, Gabby Petito , be reported for the last time alive.
Hunter Mannies, 44, said he saw the man who looked like Laundrie wearing a hoodie and drinking alone at the end of the bar on the night of August 26 at Bullwinkle’s Saloon in West Yellowstone.
“He was just mad at the world he seemed to be,” Mannies told the Post.
“I didn’t care about him other than he and this other couple were the only ones in there,” he said.
But then he and a doctor friend started talking to the couple – another doctor and his partner.
“The convo got interested in hunting, guns and politics,” Mannies said, adding that that’s when he realized the man had been listening.
“The guy just sounded crazy, then at some lull in the conversation he said, ‘Stupid southerners and fucking Republicans. “”
Mannies said his friend hit back, “Stupid southerners? She and I both have ‘Dr.’ in front of our names. Do you?”
“I kind of laughed and said, ‘Well, where are you from? and he said, “New York,” Mannies said. “And I said, ‘Okay, New York’ and he said, ‘I have a name, it’s Brian. “
“I said, ‘Let me ask you this, New York. What did you expect to find in a small mountain town in the middle of nowhere in Montana? Did you expect to find a group of Democrats? “
Mannies said they returned to their conversation, but they got an odd vibe from the man the rest of the evening.
“He was too invested in our conversation. We felt watched, ”Mannies said. “He didn’t talk to the bartenders. He was there alone. It was just strange. “
Mannies said her friend also told him that she thought “he had that serial killer look.”
Mannies said they had explained how “bizarre” the meeting had been several times before they went their separate ways during the trip.
But when the news of Petito’s disappearance hit the headlines, his friend called him. “She said he was the crazy guy at the bar,” he said.
Mannies said he watched body camera footage of Laundrie and Petito taken by authorities in response to an alleged domestic incident in Moab, Utah.
“Just the way he behaved and I heard his voice, it was him,” Mannies said.
A manager at the West Yellowstone bar did not respond to a request for comment.
Mannies, a former member of Parliament for Southern Parish, Louisiana, said he contacted the FBI about the sighting and spoke with them for about 45 minutes.
“How many people named Brian from New York who look exactly like him are in the middle of nowhere at the bar?” ” he said.
Petito was reportedly last seen alive on August 27 at a restaurant in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, about 120 miles from the bar Mannies believed to have seen him.
His remains were discovered last week in the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming.
An autopsy concluded his death was a homicide, although no further details were disclosed.
On September 1, Laundrie returned home to the couple’s Florida home without Petito, and quickly engaged with a lawyer and refused to cooperate with police regarding his disappearance.
Laundrie has been charged with unauthorized use of his debit card and authorities are on a massive manhunt to find him.
