Travel in 2021 may include a vaccination passport

(CNN) – If you are feeling locked in after months and months of the pandemic, you are not alone.

Many are eager to travel again, but proof of vaccination may be required to escape.

Smartphone apps such as CommonPass are being created to allow users to upload a COVID-19 test result or, possibly, proof of vaccination.

It generates a QR code that can be scanned to enter stadiums, cinemas and even other countries without revealing sensitive information.

While traveling, the user can also consult the app to see the COVID-19 rules based on their route.

IBM has also developed an application called Digital Health Pass.

The app allows businesses and sites to customize what they would need to enter, including COVID-19 tests, temperature checks, and immunization records, which would be stored in a mobile wallet.

For those who don’t have a smartphone, a few companies are also working on a smart card that strikes a balance between traditional paper vaccine certificates and an online version that’s easier to store and replicate.

CommonPass and IBM have put privacy at the heart of their initiatives.

IBM says it allows users to control and consent to the use of their health data and allows them to choose the level of detail they want to provide to authorities.
