NEW YORK (AP) – Frightened passengers and crew members flew over the cabin of a Turkish Airlines plane during its Saturday crossing in Maine. 30 people were hit by bumps, cuts and a broken leg, before landing safely at John F airport in New York. Kennedy International Airport, officials said.
Dozens of ambulances lined up in front of a terminal to quickly treat the wounded who had left the plane that had departed Istanbul for the 10-hour trip.
Spokesman Steve Coleman, of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, told The Associated Press that 28 people had been taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Queens after taking off from the plane at 17:35. Flight 1 of Turkish Airlines struck turbulence about 45 minutes before landing at JFK airport, Coleman said. The crew declared an emergency while the Boeing 777 was still in the air, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The airline has stated "deeply saddened by this unfortunate experience, and closely monitors the state of health of injured passengers and provides them with resources."
This was the second Saturday incident involving an aircraft in the metropolitan area of New York.
Earlier in the day, the Newark Liberty International Airport temporarily closed its runways after a Montreal – Fort Lauderdale flight having made an emergency landing with smoke in its cargo hold.
The National Meteorological Service issued alerts Saturday to warn pilots of the expected turbulence.
