LANSING, Mich. – Residents of a Jackson neighborhood get sick and wonder if the lagoons stranded nearby are perhaps to blame – the University of Michigan is looking into whether Jackson's Cascades Park is causing a health problem public.
The university will conduct a study to determine whether mosquitoes and molds affect the health and livelihoods of residents.
Residents say the Cascade Park County lagoons were clear, but that they are now filled with green mud. The lagoons also flood neighboring houses, damaging the basements.
"We know that because of this we think we have more mold and that some of us have mold allergy, some do not," said Elaine Wolf-Baker, a worried resident .
Stagnant water is also a concern.
"We had parties and barbecues and we all got together to watch the fireworks and we can not do it anymore because the mosquitoes are so bad," said Wolf-Baker.
A public health team made up of graduate students in epidemiology from the University of Manitoba will consider their concerns. The team will conduct a study to determine the impact of lagoons on people emotionally and physically.
"Another woman has COPD, I'm asthmatic now," Wolf-Baker said.
The team will discuss with residents, gather data and make recommendations.
"If it's a problem that the city can deal with, then, absolutely, then I will advocate any possible change.If it's something that has to go through another entity like the county, I'll definitely be an ardent Defender of this, too, "Colleen Sullivan, Ward 6 Councilor, said.
Wolf-Baker said she was happy that the team is coming.
"This could trigger their power to know that it affects not only people visually but also the health of people," said Sullivan.
The owners of the area asked the county to flirt the lagoons. They are waiting for an engineering company to determine the best way to proceed with the drainage works, then they will sign the petition after getting a cost estimate.
The work could last two years.
A public meeting will be held on September 30th.
