RALEIGH, NC (WITN) – Two major hospital systems in the state today told employees they need to get their COVID-19 vaccine soon.

Duke University Health System and UNC Health announced the mandatory vaccinations in emails to their workers.

Both systems have said employees must receive their vaccine by September 21.

The UNC announcement is for its hospitals, but does not include hospitals run like UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro, or Nash UNC Health Care in Rocky Mount. A UNC spokeswoman Lenoir said they would talk about a vaccination requirement, but had no plans to do so anytime soon.

It comes as other major hospital systems in the state, including Atrium Health, Cone Health and Novant Health, also announce vaccine requirements.

Vidant Health in Greenville said that while it does not announce a vaccine requirement today, its management team, as well as its infectious disease experts, “are urgently discussing when and how of which we will take this measure “.

The North Carolina Healthcare Association also today supported the mandatory vaccination of hospital workers.
