At Penn Medicine, one of our research programs aims to understand why some people are at increased risk for CSM. In studying this question among the US population, we identified a number of predictor variables for SAM, including male, African American race, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, low HDL (good cholesterol), poor kidneys. function, and abnormal measurements on an ECG. These factors, when combined, help us calculate an overall score and identify individuals or subgroups with a higher risk of MSC.
