The panel series, “We Need to Talk: Conversations on Racism for a More Resilient Las Vegas,” will feature an in-person and live discussion at 2:30 pm on November 3. The series is sponsored by UNLV Libraries and Greenspun College of Urban Affairs.
“We Need to Talk” is an educational series that examines the impact of multiple aspects of systemic racism on our community. The goal is to come up with actions that communities and individuals can take to effect positive change. The series features members of the Southern Nevada community, UNLV alumni, and scholars on issues of race and systemic racism.
The next discussion is titled “We need to talk about AAPI inclusion”.
The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community is one of the fastest growing populations in Las Vegas and southern Nevada. Yet Asian Americans have long faced prejudice and discrimination, their experiences often going unnoticed and their accomplishments dismissed. This roundtable will explain why understanding and learning more about the history, achievements and aspirations of AAPI is essential to create a more inclusive society.
Topics will include the definition of inclusiveness, the positive impact of the AAPI community in Nevada, and ways to combat anti-Asian hatred.
Panelists
Mark Padoongpatt, Director of Asian and Asian American Studies at UNLV and Associate Professor of Asian American Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies, will be the guest host. Panelists include:
- Kathy Sisolak, First Lady of Nevada
- Jean Munson, NEW Leadership Nevada Program Coordinator, UNLV Nevada Women’s Research Institute
- Craig Valdez, Chairman of the Clark County AAPI Community Commission
- Radhika Kunnel, co-founder of the South Asian Women’s Alliance

“We need to talk about inclusion AAPI,” is scheduled from 2:30 pm to 4 November in the auditorium on the first floor of the UNLV. Greenspun Room . The event will also be available live on the UNLV Libraries website and on the UNLV Facebook page. Archived episodes from previous episodes of “We Need to Talk” are now available on the UNLV Libraries website.
