Unvaccinated parents die of COVID-19, 5 orphans including a newborn

An unvaccinated California couple died of complications from COVID-19 within weeks of each other, leaving five young children being raised by their grandmother. Their brood includes a newborn baby, to whom Davy Macias, a 37-year-old birth nurse, delivered by Caesarean section during intubation. She died on August 26 before she could meet her new daughter, CNN reported.

Davy’s husband, Daniel Macias, a 38-year-old math teacher at the college, was being treated at the same hospital as his wife when she gave birth. He was able to look at pictures nurses showed him of his new baby girl before he too died of COVID-19 on September 9.

Terry Macias, a recently retired kindergarten teacher who now cares for her son’s children – three girls and two boys, ages 0-8 – has yet to name the child. The family simply calls her Baby Girl for now.

Terry believes her son and daughter-in-law likely contracted the coronavirus during a recent trip to an indoor water park, a family excursion before school began, she told CNN. The couple had been extremely cautious about COVID-19 at the start of the pandemic, having their groceries delivered and diligently wiping down surfaces, she noted. (The couple had sold their house before the pandemic started and were living with Terry.)

They weren’t against the vaccine, she added, just wanted to know more about the safety of it before they got it.

“It wasn’t that they didn’t want to get the vaccine – they planned it,” she said.

The sudden loss of Davy and Daniel shook the family and their children, who Terry said have not yet come to terms with their parents’ deaths.

“[Sometimes] our dreams don’t come true, ”she was forced to tell her 3-year-old granddaughter recently after dreaming that her father was coming home from the hospital.
