The family of a 39-year-old mother in Utah, who died just four days after taking her second dose of the COVID vaccine, believe her death could be directly related to the vaccine. But medical experts are warning the public not to jump to conclusions until all the facts have been gathered.
Kassidi Kurill received her second dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, February 1. Over the next few days, she became ill and her condition worsened. On Friday, Kurill was dead.

Kurill’s father Alfred Hawley told Fox News on Wednesday that his daughter “was apparently healthy as a horse” and had “no known underlying conditions.”
Despite the tragic death of his daughter, Hawley, 69, and diabetic, still received the vaccine himself due to the threat COVID-19 poses to his population. He says he acknowledges his daughter’s tragic death was one in a million.
“It looks like she was the odd one who had the terrible reaction,” Hawley said.
Dr Erik Christensen, chief medical examiner for the Utah Department of Health, told Fox News that Kurill’s second dose of vaccine and his death are only “temporally related.”
“We have no evidence that there are links between vaccines and deaths at this point,” he said. “We have no indication of this.”
Christensen said side effects from the vaccine were to be expected. But how an individual responds to the vaccine, he said, will ultimately be determined by their biology.
“Certainly there are side effects of a vaccine that are directly related to the vaccine and what’s going on in your body,” Christensen said. “You know, the pain in your arm … the feverish symptoms related to your immune response to what’s been put in you. This stuff is clearly happening.”
As of Thursday, March 11, 2021, more than half a million people in Utah have been partially vaccinated, while nearly 340,000 have been fully vaccinated, according to figures from coronavirus.utah.gov. The population of Utah is approximately 3.3 million people.

The Food and Drug Administration requires vaccine suppliers to report any deaths after COVID vaccination to the Adverse Vaccine Reaction Reporting System (VAERS). In the VAERS database, there are four reported deaths involving residents of Utah. One of those four deaths fits Kurill’s age description, while the other three were all 80 years old.
The Utah Department of Health told Fox News that the medical examiner’s office “will investigate any death for which the COVID-19 vaccine is listed on the death certificate.”
“There is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines caused deaths in Utah. Reports of adverse reactions and deaths after vaccination do not necessarily mean that the vaccine caused the reaction or death. Reports of concern are verified and scientifically investigated on any death report to request additional information and learn more about what happened and to determine whether the death was the result of the vaccine or not. “
Christensen told Fox News that the cases involving death after the vaccine are worth investigating, but until we know all the results, it is only “speculation.”

An autopsy report on Kurill is pending. According to state law, he will be returned to his family. Whether or not it is made public is ultimately up to them.
