Coaches used to say the same thing over and over again, and they said it because it was far from ironic. They thought so. Because when Sarah Fuller was a goaltender at Wylie High School in Wylie, Texas, the Pirates football staff constantly relayed to Chris Bezner the same phrase he has finally grown used to hearing.
“We could definitely use it on Friday night!”
Bezner, Wylie’s women’s football coach, laughed this week as she shared the story over the phone. Not because, in retrospect, he knew with absolute certainty that if his compatriots in Wylie were in trouble, Fuller wouldn’t hesitate to dress if asked. But he laughed because he wasn’t at all stunned when he read initial reports this week of a Vanderbilt women’s soccer player, fresh out of an SEC tournament title, was training to help because that it was necessary.
