Sarah Fuller made the trip with the Vanderbilt football team to Missouri and will be dressing for Saturday’s game, ESPN’s Alex Scarborough reports.
Fuller could play, which would make her the first woman to play in a Power 5 soccer game.
“Let’s make history,” Fuller, a senior, wrote on Twitter Friday.
Fuller, a goaltender for the Vanderbilt football team, secured a spot on the list with a try this week. Vanderbilt had a pre-season withdrawal, and several of its specialists were quarantined this week after COVID-19 testing.
Katie Hnida of New Mexico and April Goss of Kent state are the only women to have played football at the FBS level, according to Scarborough. Ashley Martin became the first woman to score at the Division I level when she scored three more points for FCS Jacksonville State against Cumberland on August 30, 2001.
“I think it’s amazing and incredible,” Fuller said on the Vanderbilt website. “But I also try to separate that because I know this is a job I have to do and I want to help the team and I want to do my best. Putting this historical aspect aside just helps me focus on what I need to do. I don’t want to let them down in any way.
“It is an honor that they asked me to be able to do this and to help them.”
Fuller will be wearing a sticker on his helmet that says “Play Like a Girl.”
Soccer star Carli Lloyd visited an NFL practice in the summer of 2019. After piercing a 55-yard basket, there were questions that she could become the NFL’s first woman. She said this spring that she was still interested.
