MADISON (WKOW) – The Oregon Childhood Absenteeism Due to Respiratory Illness Study (ORCHARDS) has been studying respiratory viruses since 2015 and has since found the first known case of domestic transmission of COVID-19 in Wisconsin.
ORCHARDS has asked families in the Oregon School District to take nasal swabs after schools close in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
An Oregon student fell ill the day after her school closed, and her samples and those of her family came back negative for the flu and 14 other respiratory viruses. But testing for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, was not yet available. The family recovered and the samples were frozen with the rest of the school district.
More than a year later, study officials were able to re-test samples from families in the Oregon school district before and after SARS-CoV-2 testing was widely available.
The study found that the student and her parents tested positive for COVID-19, identifying it as the first known case of home transmission in Wisconsin.
ORCHARDS received a new three-year, $ 3 million grant from the CDC to continue helping schools and families cope with COVID-19 and other illnesses as the school returns to teaching in-person .
