The New York Times went to Mountain Home, Arkansas, to find out why only 36% of the people who live there are vaccinated. Some interviews took place in a hospital where only 50% of the staff are vaccinated.

Alexander Stockton, producer for NYT’s Opinion Video team, interviewed a 53-year-old Covid patient who said he didn’t take the vaccine because “I’m more of a libertarian and I don’t like it. ‘they tell me what I have. to be done. ”The patient died 9 days after being interviewed.

Stockton also interviewed a healthy woman who was vaccinated against her mother’s wishes. She told the interviewer that she wanted more people in her community to be vaccinated because “people should be more concerned about the well-being of people around them.”

Meanwhile, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who recently signed a bill to ban mask warrants and a bill to ban vaccine requirements, also announced he won’t there were more intensive care beds available in Arkansas for people sick with Covid.
