WhatsApp launches disappearing messages for your spicy group chats

The 21st century’s biggest cybersecurity risk has nothing to do with bank fraud, exposed diplomatic cables, or even nuclear codes … it’s someone outside of this scorching WhatsApp group chat who gets full access to all the latest lines, images and video exchanged. This miserable hive of foam and nastiness on par with Mos Eisley Cantina has the power to torpedo 95% of your personal relationships – everyone from employers to missus. But with the introduction of the disappearing WhatsApp messages, we may be able to breathe a little easier.

Striking the golden mean between the unintentional accumulation of an entire folder of highly incriminating evidence and Snapchat’s overly ephemeral read + burn mechanism, WhatsApp’s delete messages feature will automatically delete text, photos and videos after a seven day period (whether read or not). Available to toggle for Individual Chat Participants and Group Chat Admins, while the deletion period is currently set at seven days, it may be possible to change it in the future.

“We’re starting with seven days because we believe it provides the peace of mind that conversations aren’t always-on – while still being convenient so you don’t forget what you were talking about,” says a spokesperson for WhatsApp.

“The shopping list or store address you received a few days ago will be there while you need it, then disappear if you don’t.”

“While it’s great to keep memories of friends and family, most of what we send doesn’t have to be forever. Our goal is to make conversations on WhatsApp as close to the person as possible, which means they shouldn’t have to stay on indefinitely.

And paired with WhatsApp’s famous end-to-end encryption, group chat has never been so secure.

To activate this boon once it’s officially rolled out, you’ll need to toggle it by conversation. Open WhatsApp, tap the contact name / conversation > Options > before selecting Messages that disappear. But beware… this will not apply to old messages. Just those who are moving forward. In addition, copying and screen capture of said messages will always be very possible; and if a disappearing message is forwarded to a conversation without the feature activated, it will actually remain.

Stay freezing, guys.
