LOS ANGELES – A day after Giants coach Bruce Bochy announced that Steven Duggar would remain in the center, the sophomore was found in the right field.
The participants gathered after Tuesday's game and decided that Kevin Pillar, acquired in the morning, would have most of the time in the middle of the field. Duggar will always start there and still play there when Pillar is off, but for the moment, he's changing position. Bochy said the decision had been made because Pillar had not played a lot in his career and that Duggar had done it recently in the minor leagues.
"I think the transition is a little easier for Duggar," said Bochy.
Pillar made 579 big league games in the center of the field, against only 55 left and seven right. He has been a formidable defender and gold glove finalist. There is therefore no demotion of Duggar, who could reach that level himself. Duggar has been a center player since last season but made 135 appearances in the miners' right field and played until 2017.
"I'm open to that," said Duggar. "It will be good here and very funny … I'm excited for that."
This is a rare champagne problem for the Giants, as it would be an above-average option in any area of the field. But the decision is still a little curious simply because Duggar is – or was – being trained as the center player of the future. Pillar is eligible for a free transaction after 2020 and can be traded or not submitted before that date.

One would think that the giants would like Duggar to establish himself now, but they decided to leave with the veteran. Duggar said all the good things about it on Wednesday.
"If a ball falls (between us) there, it was supposed to be a hit," he said.
