Wisconsin COVID-19 cases peak in 6 months

MADISON, Wisconsin. – The rate of coronavirus cases in Wisconsin reached a level not seen since the winter on Monday, as the highly contagious variant of the delta virus fueled a new wave of cases.

The Department of Health Services reported that the seven-day average for new cases was 1,201 – the first time the average had exceeded 1,200 since early February. Over the past two weeks, the moving average number of new daily cases has increased by 88%, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins. Health officials have also reported three more deaths, bringing the total to 8,324 confirmed and likely deaths from COVID019.

Almost all hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19 now come from people who are not vaccinated, and state officials are making vaccination the best tool against the virus. The state offered on-site vaccinations at the state fair last week, which resulted in the administration of 608 doses of the vaccine. About 53% of the state’s total population is fully vaccinated.

“As the Delta variant spreads throughout our state, getting shot is the best way to protect each other and our communities,” Governor Tony Evers said in a statement.
