Yemassee city leaders hold press conference after several people were shot dead

YEMASSEE, Georgia (WTOC) – Yemassee city leaders will hold a press conference on Monday afternoon, a day after several people were shot dead.

The start is at 12:30 p.m. and the OMCC will be broadcasting the press conference live.

One person was killed and seven others were injured in the wee hours of Sunday morning. According to Yemassee Police Chief Gregory Alexander, the shooting happened around 12:15 a.m. Sunday on St. Clair Street near the Snappy Foods convenience store.

Chief Alexander said he believed an argument had taken place and things had escalated. At least 20 shots were fired, affecting eight people, including one 31-year-old, one 22-year-old, two 14-year-old, two 12-year-old and one 8-year-old.

The eighth victim was a 33-year-old man who died of his injuries. The remaining victims sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. The chief said that this area is not known for a lot of crimes.

Chief Alexander said the victims were not all from Yemassee but from surrounding areas.
