URK, The Netherlands (AP) – Young riots protesting on the first night of a Dutch curfew torched a coronavirus testing center and launched fireworks at police in a Dutch fishing village .
Police said on Sunday they fined more than 3,600 people across the country for breaking the curfew which ran from 9 p.m. Saturday to 4:30 a.m. Sunday and arrested 25 people for failing to comply with the curfew or for violence.
Video from the village of Urk, 80 kilometers (50 miles) northeast of Amsterdam, showed young people breaking into the coronavirus testing center near the village port before it was set on fire on Saturday night .
The police and the municipality released a statement on Sunday expressing their anger at the riots, “from the launching of fireworks and stones to the destruction of police cars and the burning of the test site as a deep point.”
“This is not only unacceptable, but also a slap in the face, especially for the staff of the local health authority who are doing all they can at the test center to help the people of Urk,” local authorities said. , adding that the curfew would be strictly enforced for the rest of the week.
All that was left of the portable building used to administer coronavirus tests on Sunday was a toasted shell.
Amsterdam police were also preparing for another protest on Sunday, sending police to a square where protesters clashed with police a week ago. The city’s municipality designated the square as a “risk zone,” a move that gave police additional powers to search people.
