YouTube has revealed that it is ending the ten-year-old Rewind feature for good following criticism of its year-end compilation video, which has become the most hated video of all time on the platform in 2018.
The video-sharing service confirmed its decision to TubeFilter, saying it will focus on a different kind of experience. However, YouTube did not disclose specific details about Rewind’s replacement. He also announced his move on Twitter:
In a statement to TubeFilter, he said his decision was due to the growth of the platform, saying it was now impossible to condense its vastness into an abridged compendium. Explaining the reason for its decision, the service also said in a tweet:
When we launched Rewind in 2011, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate some of the amazing things the YouTube community has created. Over the years, we’ve found that a single Rewind created by YouTube can’t reflect the full breadth of our creator community.
Nonetheless, YouTube promised that Rewind would be replaced with “something a little more interactive.” It will also rely on the creators to produce their own versions of the year-end Rewind content, as many have done in previous years. However, the Google-owned platform will not financially support these initiatives and will only promote them through its social channels.

YouTube’s latest move isn’t all that surprising. He interrupted Rewind last year, apparently due to the pandemic and social injustice riots sparked by the murder of George Floyd. The 2018 edition was also widely criticized for its greater focus on mainstream celebrities rather than local YouTube creators. The video currently has over 19 million likes compared to 3 million likes.
This was the last time YouTube made a few-minute video compilation of creators and hit songs in collaboration with digital studio Portal A. These events were obvious signs that YouTube would end up putting all the effort aside.
If you miss the Rewind experience, YouTube will always post year-end recaps, including its list of annual trends. You can also take a trip down memory lane by watching previous Rewinds, which are available to watch on most of the best Android phones and laptops.
