A Yucaipa mother of five who worked as a registered nurse in Kaiser Permanente’s labor and delivery department in Fontana died last week from complications from COVID-19, her family said.
Davy Macias was 37 years old, with children aged 7 and under, including a newborn.
She died on August 26.
“She’s the kind of person who, when she walks into a room, lights her up,” her brother Vong Serey said in a telephone interview on Monday, August 30. “Everyone’s attention is on her because she’s such a great person. She has very good vibes. A very loving and caring mother.

Macias and her husband, Daniel, took their family on a beach vacation in late July, Serey said. Their last stop before heading home was an indoor water park in Orange County. About a week later, in early August, Serey said, Daniel Macias texted him that his wife had been admitted to the emergency room with COVID-19.
A few days later, Daniel Macias was also in the hospital battling the disease, Serey said.
In an August 12 Facebook post, Davy Macias wrote: “Thank you to everyone who knows about our status and helped us through the process. The last few days have been particularly difficult not to see my children. I was hospitalized at 32 weeks with covid. Currently on 10L of oxygen to maintain but I hope he will be weaned soon. Just exhausted and exhausted for energy. Pray for my husband’s health now too, as he is taking this course only a few days behind me.

On August 18, six weeks before Macias’ due date, a doctor delivered the baby, Serey said. The little girl is in good health at the moment.
Macias’ condition worsened soon after, his brother said.
Macias was not vaccinated, Serey said, and was reluctant to be vaccinated because she was pregnant. Serey didn’t know if her husband had been vaccinated.
Daniel Macias is still in critical condition, Serey said.
The five Macias children, who Serey said developed flu-like symptoms after their vacation but recovered quickly, are currently in the care of family friends.
Serey, who lives in La Verne, started a GoFundMe to help cover various expenses.
More than $ 105,000 had been raised on Tuesday morning August 31st.
“I am overwhelmed with the support, blown away by how quickly and quickly the amount has increased,” Serey said.
Serey last saw and spoke to his younger sister in June, after a meeting for her wedding anniversary.
Serey said his sister was the only family member to die from COVID-19.
