On the back of the new Edge 530 and 830 computers, Garmin has announced five new smart GPS watches: the Forerunner 945, the Forerunners 245 and 245 Music and the Forerunners 45 and 45S.
The new watches respect the five-button design rather than a touch screen and include a permanently readable pixel color memory display.
As you can imagine, the new Forerunners have an integrated optical heart rate as well as tracking pace, calories and sleep cycle. However, Garmin has added new security and tracking features that allow you to share your location in real time with predetermined contacts and ask for help if you need it.
The watches also give you access to Garmin Coach, which allows you to synchronize workouts and professionally designed workout plans with the Garmin Connect watch and adapt them to your current fitness level. You can also download your own workouts on the watch, as in previous versions.
At the moment, Garmin Coach only applies to running, but we believe that cycling projects will not be too far away.
Garmin Forerunner 945
Presented as a high-end multisport watch, the Garmin Forerunner 945 replaces the 935. It offers integrated GPS, GLONASS and Galileo connectivity for ultimate accuracy.
Beyond the optical heart rate, the watch receives the new Pulse OX sensor, which claims to also monitor blood oxygen saturation, altitude acclimation and advanced sleep monitoring.
With a Corning Gorilla Glass DX lens, the watch measures 47 x 47 x 13.7 mm and has a resolution of 240 x 240 pixels.
For weighing 50g, the bezel is made of fiber-reinforced polymer, is compatible with Garmin QuickFit watch straps and plays well with Varia lamps.
Beyond the positioning chip, the Forerunner 945 features a barometric altimeter, compass, gyro accelerometer and can communicate with devices and sensors via Bluetooth, ANT + and WiFi, including power meters.
The battery life would be up to two weeks in smart standby mode, up to 36 hours in GPS mode and up to 10 hours in GPS mode with music.
The 945 also uses FirstBeat's calculations to analyze your recent activities and tell you if your training has been productive, while highlighting areas you may need to work on.
It is interesting to note that in the specifications, Garmin shows the new ClimbPro Ascent planner as it appears on new Edge computers under "Outdoor Recreation Features", but in the profiles to which it is available, cycling does not. is not listed.

Garmin Forerunner 245 and 245 Music
The 245 and 245 Music occupy some spaces in the Forerunner hierarchy. Still, the low-end watch includes FirstBeat training software, Varia light support, breadcrumb style navigation, and the ability to sync workouts via Garmin Coach.

Garmin Forerunner 45 and 45S
At £ 170 / $ 200 / $ 300, the Forerunner 4 and 4S are perhaps the most economical and basic watches in the lineup, but they still outperform what we would call a "fitness follower" like the Vivoactive watches. .
These cheaper Forerunners have all the basic features of their more expensive counterparts, including GPS, GLONASS and Galileo positioning, ANT + connectivity, integrated optical heart rate and an accelerometer.
The "S" version is designed for smaller wrists measuring 39.5 x 39.5 x 11.4 mm (with case), while the standard version measures 42 x 42 x 11.4 mm. The two screens share a screen of 208 x 208 pixels and have an estimated battery life of 7 days in Smartwatch mode and 13 hours with GPS tracking.
Since sensor support is limited, only basic cycling measurements are available, but the watch has a cycling-specific profile with the ability to add indoor cycling via Garmin Connect.
The specifications mention iPhone and Android compatibility, however, the same data sheet does not mention Bluetooth connection.
