Brussels had already rejected such a plan when Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay, now part of Johnson's campaign, met with European Foreign Minister Michel Barnier last week.
Barclay told Barnier that the safety net had died five times during the meeting. Sources said he had told Barner that they wanted a series of mini-transactions and alternative arrangements for the Irish border.
He was told that it was a fantasy about Brexit and that he was not a starter, and that the "mini-contracts" described in the plans EU emergency were temporary and covered only "basic elements" such as aviation, roaming mobile phones and driver 's licenses. They did not include major issues such as trade or the Irish border.
