COVID survivor taking flu precautions
Despite the lower numbers at the start of the flu season, there is still reason to be on the alert. Rick Farmer, along with his wife and two boys, all contracted COVID-19 in June. With the lingering effects, Farmer says he’s still concerned about the flu.
TAMPA, Florida – The Florida Department of Health said the number of known cases of COVID-19 in the state increased by 17,345 on Thursday and Friday. (The state did not release case numbers on Thanksgiving Day). According to the daily state update, the total number of cases in Florida is now 979,021.
The death toll of Florida residents has reached 18,363, an increase of 109 since Wednesday’s update. In addition, a total of 233 non-Floridians have died in the state.
Locally, Hillsborough County reported 16 new deaths, Citrus County reported five, Highlands and Sumter counties reported three, Hernando County reported two, while Pasco Counties, Pinellas and Sarasota each reported one new death.
Of the 979,021 cases, 963,751 are Florida residents while 15,270 are not Florida residents currently in the state.

The state is not reporting a total number of “recovered” coronavirus patients. As of Friday, 3,748 Floridians were currently hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19; a total of 54,467 were hospitalized for treatment at one time.
A total of 8,678,056 residents were tested in the state on Friday – just over a third of the state’s population – according to the Florida Department of Health.

The number of new cases had generally declined in September, reflecting the number of tests carried out. But it started to rise again. The 10,105 new cases reported last Sunday were the highest since July 25.
The rate of re-positive tests declined from its summer peak, remaining below 10% for several months, but it has also started to rise again. It was 6.20% Thursday, the most recent date available.
After peaking in July, the number of deaths also began a downward trend in August that continued through October – though “significant delays” in reporting the data, as the state says, make the interpretation of short-term trends from this statistic less reliable.
