ST. GEORGE – The Alzheimer's Association of St. George's will present "The Alzheimer's Epidemic", offering insights into the disease, its impact on the people of southern Utah and explaining what is being done to find a cure.
Ronnie Daniel, Executive Director of the Utah Branch of the Alzheimer's Association, will discuss the spread of the epidemic across America. Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fourth largest in Utah. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive form of dementia and accounts for 60 to 80% of dementia cases.
Some see it as a disease that steals the brain because it causes the death of nerve cells in the brain, resulting in loss of brain tissue followed by a loss of function and communication between cells.
There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease and, while many people have heard of it, some people do not know exactly what it is. This is a major problem, as is the care of people with Alzheimer's, the association said in a press release.
Alzheimer's is a disease that affects the entire family, especially a person's partner or spouse. For each person affected by the disease, three unpaid caregivers on average provide support. They often provide help with activities of daily living, transportation, and camaraderie. Caregivers are prone to experiencing mental and physical stress during service due to length of care and other demands.
The presentation will take place on June 21st from 10:00 to 11:00 am at the Select Health Auditorium, 1424 E. Foremaster Drive.
