BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) – China’s Chang’e-5 probe is preparing for a soft landing on the moon to begin the country’s first alien body sample collection.
The spacecraft’s landing-ascender combination separated from its orbiter-return combination at 4:40 a.m. (Beijing time) Monday, according to the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA).
Launched on November 24, Chang’e-5 is one of the most complicated and difficult missions in Chinese aerospace history, as well as the world’s first lunar sampling mission in more than 40 years.
The spacecraft is functioning well and communication with ground control is normal, CNSA said.
The landing gear combination will perform a soft landing on the moon and perform automatic sampling. The orbiter-turner will continue to orbit approximately 200 km above the lunar surface and await the rendezvous and docking with the ascender. Enditem
