The epicenter was located in the sea, near the northwestern coast of Japan and in front of the Niigata and Yamagata prefectures, at a depth of 10 km.
In the Yamagata region, the intensity was 6 in the lower range of the Japanese scale, slightly lower than that of Niigata.
There are still no reports of possible casualties or serious material damage.
Authorities warned of possible tsunamis in Niigata, Yamagata and Ishikawa prefectures.
