The epicenter was located in the sea, near the northwestern coast of Japan and in front of the Niigata and Yamagata prefectures, at a depth of 10 km.

There are still no reports of possible casualties or serious material damage.
Authorities warned of possible tsunamis in Niigata, Yamagata and Ishikawa prefectures.
